MARTIN WALLACE - MUSICIAN/TEACHER

I have been teaching piano and flute to individuals as well as leading groups in explorations of improvised music in various styles such as folk, rock and jazz. I teach students of all ages, from 5 years old to adults. I believe all people can find a way to express themselves through music and that it is essential for our well-being as humans and as a society.

Lessons: $75 for 1 hour/$60 for 45 min./$50 for 1/2 hour.

ABOUT MARTIN WALLACE:

I have been playing piano since the age of 7 and flute since the age of 13. I received my BA in music at Macalester College in 1993.

I have taught in the NYC public schools with local jazz drummer Renaud Penant and have led the jazz/improv classes “Family Jam” and “Teen Jam” at Different Directions since 2018.  My involvement in performing and writing for a wide variety of musical styles informs my approach to teaching music and improvisation. Given my fluency in multiple musical vocabularies and theoretical frameworks, including Jazz, Classical and Rock/Folk, I am able to reach every student I meet, no matter what musical experience they may have and no matter what kind of music appeals to them. As one great music master once said, “If it sounds good, it is good.”

No matter who you are or where you are coming from, you can express yourself musically using a vocabulary that we will develop together, one note at a time.
